Borromei Loft Residential

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2023

Scanning this interior photograph from top to bottom reveals a dramatic double-height residential space captured in sophisticated architectural photography. The upper portion presents an extensive skylight system with black steel framework creating a geometric grid pattern against luminous white daylight that floods through the glazed panels. Diagonal linear light fixtures in warm white stretch across the void at angles, their slender illuminated forms drawing the eye through space like suspended calligraphic strokes. Moving to the left wall, a striking sculptural staircase appears as a series of black angular platforms projecting from a textured grey concrete surface, each tread floating without visible support in a dramatic zigzag ascent. Above the stair on the white wall glows a large circular light fixture emitting soft amber warmth like captured sunlight, its round form perhaps three feet in diameter. The middle register reveals a mezzanine level visible through transparent glass barriers, showing bookshelves filled with volumes and intimate seating areas beyond. The lower portion presents the main living zone where a generous L-shaped sofa in sophisticated warm grey fabric occupies the center-right, dressed with cream and grey cushions suggesting softness like well-worn linen. Before the sofa sits a minimalist rectangular coffee table in pure white, its clean geometry cool and smooth as porcelain. The seating arrangement rests upon a large area rug in deep charcoal tones, its surface appearing plush and absorptive underfoot. Rising near the sofa stands a mature indoor tree with deep green foliage, its organic branches spreading perhaps eight feet high, bringing living warmth like a gentle garden presence into the architectural space. The right boundary presents floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves in crisp white, their gridded compartments holding colorful book spines in warm reds, deep blues, golden yellows, and forest greens that introduce chromatic energy like scattered jewels. At far left, lush green potted plants cluster near the stair base, their foliage fresh as spring growth. The overall atmosphere feels luminous yet intimate, the abundant daylight from above creating brightness like an overcast afternoon while warmer artificial sources add golden undertones suggesting domestic comfort and intellectual refuge.

The challenge of this project was to be able to re-propose the succession of secret spaces typical of Milan's historic canter, going beyond the ancient building structure through a contemporary design that would guarantee a new atmosphere. Being able to ensure adequate natural lighting for all spaces was only possible by creating wings and new openings that would allow the light filters through the large skylight in the living area to reach the most private spaces.
