K Farm Urban Design

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022

This vertical urban farming facility presents a cylindrical interior space approximately three to four stories in height, captured from an elevated vantage point looking across and slightly downward toward a central ground-level floor. Scanning from the top of the composition, a dramatic domed ceiling constructed of transparent glass panels supported by white steel beams radiates outward from a central circular opening, creating a sunburst pattern against a clear blue sky. Through the transparent walls, tall residential towers are visible in the distance, their forms softened by atmospheric haze suggesting warm humid conditions. Moving downward through the image, multiple horizontal tiers of growing beds curve along the interior perimeter walls, filled with lush green plants in various shades from pale yellow-green to deep forest green, their textures soft and leafy like lettuce or similar salad greens. The white steel structural framework feels cool and smooth like painted metal, contrasting with the organic warmth of the vegetation. At the middle level, a figure wearing dark clothing walks along an elevated metal walkway with thin horizontal railings, their posture relaxed and purposeful. In the lower left portion, a person in light-colored clothing tends to plants at a stainless steel processing station, hands engaged with green produce that appears freshly harvested. The ground floor features a circular pattern of light gray paving with a subtle spiral or concentric design, smooth and clean like polished concrete. Near the center bottom, glass entrance doors with an exit sign above provide passage to an exterior plaza bathed in warm afternoon sunlight. Another figure stands in the right portion observing the growing systems. The overall atmosphere feels fresh, bright, and hopeful, filled with the implied scent of growing greens and clean circulating air, the temperature suggesting comfortable warmth moderated by the transparent envelope.

K Farm challenges urban farming under extreme conditions and turns farming into natural education that people can enjoy. Because of this coastal condition along Victoria Harbour, It has innovated three types of farming to suit this specific climate. One is Hydroponics to provide weatherproof farming for in all conditions, two is aquaponics to study how fish and plants can coexist, and three is organic with various height and species to serve as inclusive farming.
