Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022
This square-format photograph depicts two young figures appearing to float in midair within an autumn forest setting, their bodies suspended above a ground covered entirely in fallen leaves. Scanning from background to foreground, the distant area presents numerous tall, slender tree trunks rising vertically, their bark appearing as cool gray-brown against the warm orange foliage. The canopy visible at the top filters soft, diffused light through remaining leaves colored in brilliant burnt orange and deep amber, like the warm glow of embers or afternoon sunlight through honey. In the middle ground, positioned slightly right of center, a younger child wearing white short-sleeved shirt and knee-length pants hovers approximately two feet above the leaf carpet, arms extended outward at shoulder height with fingers gently spread, eyes peacefully closed, bare feet pointed downward. Moving to the left portion and closer to the viewer, an older girl wearing a simple white knee-length dress floats at similar height, her long dark hair hanging loosely past her shoulders, arms also extended outward in identical peaceful gesture, eyes closed in apparent tranquil sleep or meditation. Her pose suggests complete relaxation and surrender to weightlessness. The immediate foreground shows a weathered tree stump at left, its surface rough and textured like aged wood grain, rising to approximately knee height. The forest floor beneath both figures is thickly blanketed with fallen leaves in colors suggesting warmth of crackling fires and spiced autumn beverages, ranging from deep rust to bright pumpkin to touches of remaining green. The overall atmosphere feels hushed and dreamlike, with soft focus in the nearest foreground creating gentle transition into the scene. The lighting suggests late afternoon, casting warm golden tones throughout while leaving no harsh shadows, creating an environment that feels simultaneously tangible and impossibly magical.
People always dream. Dreams make a human move forward. Where they will lead depends on imagination and the efforts he or she encloses. In childhood, these dreams are usually purer and brighter. That is why the photographer uses children's characters in white outfits. To create a surreal effect in the "Flying in Dreams" series, Maxim Zinchuk utilizes the levitation photography technique. The main idea of the series is perfectly complemented by the words of William Shakespeare: "all things that are, are with more spirit chased than enjoyed".
