Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022
This aerial photograph presents an architectural complex nestled within a terraced agricultural landscape, captured during evening twilight. Scanning from the background forward, distant hillsides covered in regular horizontal bands of cultivated crops fade into soft blue-gray atmospheric haze, their green-blue coloring suggesting tea or similar plantation cultivation, the texture appearing as fine parallel ridges like corduroy fabric extending toward the horizon. The middle distance reveals the gradual descent of these terraced fields toward the building site, their curved contour lines following the natural topography like ripples in still water. The architectural complex occupies the central middle ground, comprising multiple interconnected white buildings arranged in a dynamic pinwheel or star-like configuration, their pristine surfaces appearing smooth as fresh snow against the darker landscape. Each building volume features a pitched gabled roof, the triangular forms creating a rhythmic pattern of peaks and valleys. The largest pavilion, positioned at the left-center, features a dramatic double-height wall of glass through which warm golden light pours outward like honey, illuminating the entrance area. Smaller buildings extend in various directions, connected by covered passages, their white walls catching subtle blue twilight from above while warm accent lighting along their bases creates soft amber halos. Moving to the foreground, a curving access road of gray-brown surface winds from the lower right corner toward the building complex, its path organic and yielding like a flowing stream. A small parking area at the lower right contains several vehicles appearing as small colored shapes, predominantly white and silver with one warm orange accent, their presence providing human scale. Small figures of people appear as tiny forms along the road, suggesting gentle activity. The overall atmosphere feels cool and tranquil, the blue-dominant palette suggesting the temperature of early evening air, while the warm architectural lighting offers promise of interior comfort and hospitality.
Situated in Ya'an City, Sichuan Province, this project boasts an excellent 270 degree view of tea fields to the south and the Sichuan-Tibet Railway to the north with the tea shore sitting between the undulating hills and surrounded by a green sea of tea. The design narrows the distance between the building and the environment with a focus on visitors' experience and less impact on the nature.
