DC 3 Stool

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2022

This audio description presents two sculptural wooden stools positioned on a grey stone floor against a grey stone wall. Beginning with overall orientation, the format is square, showing furniture objects in an architectural interior setting. The nearer stool occupies the lower left portion of the frame, while a second stool sits in the upper right, creating diagonal visual flow. Each stool follows a distinctive Z-shaped or zigzag profile when viewed from the side. The closest stool presents its form at a three-quarter angle, allowing appreciation of both its curved seat surface and its remarkable ribbed understructure. The seat surface appears smooth and flat, finished in pale honey-colored wood reminiscent of warm morning light on natural pine. The outer edges display a darker accent, a burnt orange or terracotta tone suggesting autumn leaves, which reveals the laminated construction where many thin layers of wood have been glued together. Beneath the seat, the structure curves downward in a smooth arc, then angles forward to meet the floor in a flat base. This entire undulating form is created through parallel ribs of bent wood, approximately twelve to fifteen curved laminations running from front to back, creating a texture like the ridges on a seashell or the corrugations of cardboard. The spaces between these ribs create rhythmic shadows, cool and soft. The second stool in the background presents a similar Z-form but viewed from a different angle, showing more of its side profile. Its coloration appears slightly lighter, more cream than honey, with less pronounced edge contrast. The stone environment feels cool and substantial, grey tiles on the floor reflecting soft ambient light, grey panels on the wall displaying subtle diagonal veining. The overall atmosphere suggests a gallery or museum space, quiet and contemplative, where light falls gently from above without harsh shadows.

Inspired by the DC 3 aircraft, the stool's concept refers to the aerodynamic lines of the monoplane. Using boards of plywood through a precision cutting process that reveals the different lines of each layer, the DC 3 stool has a structural support that becomes a pleasant visual detail. The stool with a sculptural design finds in the apparent edges a way to highlight its lines. There are many ways to interact with the piece. Some might have it as a sculpture ou decoration piece, some might use it as a side table or foot rest or even for its orginal purpose: as a stool.
