The Ring Retail Development

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2022

Scanning from an elevated position approximately three stories above ground level, listeners encounter a sweeping interior atrium where architecture and cultivated nature interweave in Lead8's The Ring Retail Development. The dominant feature is an elevated pedestrian walkway that curves gracefully through the space like a gentle spiral, its structure composed of silvery steel framework supporting a pale walking surface, bounded on both sides by continuous handrails finished in warm, honeyed gold that catches the abundant natural light. This walkway begins in the lower left portion of the frame and sweeps diagonally upward and to the right, curving elegantly as it progresses toward a towering wall of glass that spans the entire right side of the composition, its gridded mullion pattern creating a rhythmic vertical and horizontal framework through which diffused daylight floods the interior with brightness suggesting a clear daytime hour. Beneath and around this elevated pathway, multiple levels of the retail development are visible, their horizontal bands stepping downward at the left side of the frame where shopfronts and corridors appear through curtains of green plantings that cascade from terraced edges. The central void below the walkway contains a remarkable interior garden where mature trees rise toward the structural canopy above, their foliage ranging from deep forest green to brighter lime tones, while atmospheric misting systems release gentle clouds of vapor that drift through the planted areas, creating a soft, humid atmosphere reminiscent of a tropical greenhouse. Green-tinted accent lights glow from within the planted zones, adding an emerald luminescence to the lower depths. Numerous people are distributed along the walkway, their figures providing human scale—some wearing warm red garments, others in earth tones and casual attire, their presence suggesting a relaxed, contemplative pace as they pause to observe the garden below or photograph their surroundings. At the right side, massive structural columns rise toward branching capitals that support the glazed roof canopy, their tree-like forms echoing the living specimens below. The overall atmosphere suggests warmth, humidity, and the fresh quality of air moving through abundant vegetation.

The Ring in Chongqing is a ground-breaking ecological retail destination featuring one of China's largest indoor botanic gardens. A first of its kind for the city, the interior design intertwines retail, nature, culture and experience and comes to life with a 42 meter tall botanical garden, interactive sports and culture, and a creative tenant mix. The power of biophilia and nature is front and center, pushing the agenda forward for retail design.
