The Peacock Wine Cellar

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2022

This audio description presents an immersive wine cellar interior of remarkable architectural ambition, scanning from the luminous apex downward through the curved walls to the reflective floor below, the overall format is square capturing a symmetrical domed space that completely surrounds the viewer in stored wine bottles, at the very top a circular opening or dome apex glows with warm golden light like concentrated sunlight filtering through amber glass creating a focal point from which all architectural elements radiate, immediately below this luminous crown the ceiling curves downward in concentric rings of horizontally stored wine bottles their glass surfaces catching light and creating a shimmering texture like overlapping fish scales or feather barbs, the bottles appear as elongated cylindrical forms ranging in color from cool steel blue to pale sage green each oriented with its base facing outward creating a rhythmic pattern of circular glass bottoms and dark shadowed necks, moving down the curved walls the bottles continue their radial arrangement becoming more horizontal as they approach eye level the color temperature shifting from warm amber tones near the illuminated ceiling to cooler blue-grey tones in the middle registers where less direct light reaches, the structural framework holding the bottles appears as a dark latticework of intersecting lines creating diamond-shaped or curved openings into which each bottle nestles securely, at the center of the composition rising from the floor a sculptural pedestal stands like a slender fountain or ceremonial stand its form tapering upward in graceful fluted lines supporting what appears to be a glass display surface perhaps for presenting selected bottles, the floor beneath reflects the entire installation like still black water creating a perfect mirror image that doubles the visual complexity and suggests infinite depth, the overall atmosphere feels hushed and reverential like entering a sacred space, the temperature seems cool and climate-controlled appropriate for wine preservation, textures range from the smooth cold glass of bottles to the matte surfaces of structural elements creating tactile variety throughout.

The Peacock's ancient craftsmanship and contemporary fabrication create an intentional joining of past and present. The cellar comprises one thousand individually handcrafted blue-glazed terra cotta tiles, glistening like the Peacock's feathers. The design team used 3d printing to prototype before working with artisans from the historic porcelain town of Jingdezhen, China to craft the final tiles. Every tile's internal LED illuminates bottles individually, this creates a soft ambiance throughout the cellar. Over three years of fabrication, the team gained great respect for the artisans.
