Scanning from the elevated aerial viewpoint, listeners encounter an expansive landscape composition where curving stone walls wind through flowering trees like rivers of earth-toned masonry flowing through clouds of pink blossoms. The overall format presents a square image depicting a designed garden space photographed from above at approximately forty-five degrees from horizontal, revealing both the sculptural forms of constructed walls and the canopy of flowering trees they contain. Beginning in the background at the upper portion of the image, masses of cherry trees in full bloom create a dense tapestry of soft pink, the color of rose petals warmed by morning light, their delicate flower clusters massing together into what appears almost like pink-tinted cotton or soft coral fabric draped across the land. Moving forward through the middle ground, three prominent serpentine walls constructed of irregular stone pieces curve and wind through the composition, their surfaces textured like rough hewn granite or weathered limestone, each stone fitting against its neighbors in patterns that suggest puzzle pieces or natural rock formations. The stone reads as cool to the touch yet sun-warmed, with colors ranging from pale cream through honey gold to darker umber and gray-brown, creating a variegated surface that catches light differently across each undulating curve. At the center of the composition, a single human figure wearing a bright vermillion jacket walks along a pathway surfaced in compressed earth or fine gravel, the warm brown suggesting packed clay or decomposed granite, smooth underfoot. The figure appears small against the monumental walls, perhaps one-twentieth the height of the frame, emphasizing the generous scale of this cultural landscape. The walls rise and fall with gentle undulation, their top edges creating rhythmic lines like musical notation across the composition. Where walls meet planted areas, vegetation softens the stone edges with wisps of grass and low shrubs in muted greens and tawny golds.
The client proposed to bring a natural but artistic atmosphere to the site. The project respects the original natural mountain atmosphere and the essence of the courtyard. It features three elements: The design of a pure cherry courtyard, elevated in the sky. A base of emerging curved textured walls made from local granite boulders form a strong image and blur the boundary of vertical wall and horizontal path. Winding roads covered in cherry blossom petals complete the impression of the forest valley.
