Balanco Stackable Stools

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022

This audio description presents a collection of seven sculptural stools arranged as a grouped installation atop a circular cream-colored rug within an industrial interior space. Scanning from background to foreground, tall steel-framed windows with multiple panes fill the upper portion, their dark frames creating a grid pattern against diffused daylight that illuminates the scene with soft, even light suggesting an overcast day. Exposed red-brown brick walls flank the windows, their rough texture contrasting with the smooth polished concrete floor that reflects subtle highlights. The stools themselves occupy the central and lower portions of the composition, arranged in a loose pyramidal grouping. At upper left, two stools stack vertically, the topmost in cool slate blue like winter sky, perched upon a larger chocolate brown form reminiscent of dark roasted coffee or rich garden soil. These faceted shapes feature multiple flat planes meeting at angular seams, suggesting stones tumbled smooth by water yet retaining crystalline geometry. Moving rightward, a tall heather gray stool stands independently, its surface appearing soft as brushed felt, cool and slightly fuzzy to imagined touch. In the foreground, four stools cluster together: a sage green form at far left, soft as spring leaves; a larger moss green piece center-front, vibrant as forest undergrowth; and a warm tawny brown form at right, earthy as autumn fields. Each stool measures approximately knee to thigh height, sized for comfortable perching. The textile surfaces appear matte and absorptive, promising warmth and yielding softness against skin, quite different from the hard mineral forms their shapes evoke. The overall atmosphere suggests quiet contemplation, the stillness of a gallery space where functional objects transcend utility to become meditation on form itself.

With the persistence of the pandemic, staying at home has become a new norm. In the most highly populated and dense city, finding peace and mental wellness can be difficult. Inspired by the pebble towers, Balanco consists of a series of multifaceted blocks, offering unlimited possibilities to arrange, position, and stack. As it requires significant patience and calmness to balance the blocks, it serves as one of the practical yet fun solutions for friends and families to enjoy with one another. When it is not used as objects for play, it doubles as stools and tables for adults and children.
