Clover High Stool

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022

A sculptural wooden high stool stands centered on gray stone pavement, photographed in warm natural daylight against a backdrop of weathered wooden doors. Scanning from top to bottom, the stool features a distinctive seat formed of three rounded lobes arranged like a clover leaf, each section displaying blonde ash wood with visible grain patterns radiating outward in swirling, flame-like configurations. The wood glows with honey and cream tones, warm as sunlight filtering through amber glass, with satiny smooth surfaces that suggest the tactile pleasure of polished timber. Three elegantly tapered legs descend from beneath each seat lobe, their forms curving outward then inward with the graceful tension of flower stems, creating Gothic arch-shaped openings between them that frame glimpses of the stone floor beyond. The legs narrow from substantial upper sections to refined cylindrical feet resting on the cool gray pavement. At approximately knee height, a circular brass ring connects all three legs, its warm golden-bronze tone catching light with subtle metallic gleam, providing visual punctuation and functional footrest. The background presents dark wooden doors or shutters in deep chocolate and russet browns, their surfaces showing the gentle weathering of time with subtle variations in tone. Scattered across the stone pavement are several dried bay leaves in muted olive and tan, curled and resting randomly, adding organic texture to the cool gray stone surface. The overall atmosphere suggests a quiet courtyard space where craft and nature intersect, the fresh luminosity of the new stool contrasting with the aged warmth of its surroundings.

The structure of the stool is inspired by the classic Romanesque arch and the top surface is in the shape of a four-leaf clover. Each "leaf" is made by pieces of wood strips in mosaic pattern. The curvy stool legs are carved by CNC machine in the first step and then fine tuned by hand polishing. Connected by a bespoke mortise and tenon joint in the center, it ensures the stability of the structure, in addition, breaks the traditional orthodox image of Chinese woodwork. This piece of creature integrates modernity and heritage in terms of both design and crafts.
