Green-Backed Tit Nesting Plan Art Installation and Pavilion

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022

Scanning this luminous pavilion from a frontal symmetrical viewpoint, listeners encounter an architectural sculpture approximately three to four meters in height, positioned on a waterfront promenade and photographed at dusk against a gradient sky. The overall form suggests a crown or protective enclosure composed of numerous tall, thin wooden panels arranged in a radial pattern around a central shelter. Beginning with the surrounding environment, a twilight sky transitions from deep blue directly overhead through softer periwinkle to gentle lavender near the horizon where it meets distant hills across a calm body of water visible through and beside the structure. Moving to the structure itself, approximately eighteen to twenty tall wooden fins stand vertically, each rising to a pointed apex, arranged in a circular formation that creates a crown-like silhouette against the evening sky. These fins appear constructed of warm-toned wood, perhaps cypress or cedar, with visible vertical grain patterns enhanced by illumination from below. The wood color suggests rich honey amber, warm as afternoon sunlight filtered through golden leaves, creating strong contrast against the cool blue atmosphere. At the center front, a semicircular arched opening approximately two meters wide and slightly less in height creates an entrance threshold, its curve like the top of a traditional doorway or the opening of a natural cave. The arch is outlined by a glowing rim of warm light, creating an inviting golden frame. Inside the arch, visible through the entrance, horizontal wooden slats arranged in a lattice pattern suggest woven construction reminiscent of traditional basket weaving or actual bird nest architecture. This woven interior glows warmly, revealing an ovoid suspended form within that resembles both a lantern and an egg shape, pale cream or warm white in color, creating the luminous heart of the installation. A wooden boardwalk extends directly toward the viewer from the entrance, its parallel planks creating a pathway of warm amber tones leading into the sanctuary space. Small ground-level lights punctuate the approach. Metal railings at the composition edges provide scale reference and indicate the waterfront promenade context.

The nest-like installation is created for visitors to get into it, take a rest and find their inner peace. Lighting design starts from the human vision instead of glowing the installation itself. As an art installation which people can get inside, design team focuses on putting attention to create the illumination balance between the environment and the visitors' visual effect. Lighting fixture with proper light distribution and cut-off angle are integrated with the structure of the installation to build a glare-free ambiance which helps to sustain the tranquility of the Sun Moon Lake.
