Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022
This image presents a contemporary interior retail space photographed from an elevated three-quarter perspective, scanning from left to right across approximately forty feet of commercial environment. Beginning at the left edge, a prominent living wall installation features lush green vegetation including trailing vines and leafy plants arranged in vertical panels, with a circular frame containing moss in varying shades of forest green and chartreuse, resembling a living artwork. The wall surface surrounding the greenery displays warm wood tones like light honey or blonde oak arranged in vertical slats. Moving toward center, the dominant architectural feature emerges: a freestanding pavilion structure constructed entirely of pale timber battens arranged vertically and angled to form a simplified house shape with a pitched roof, the spacing between slats allowing glimpses through to the interior where display shelving houses potted ferns and glass-enclosed compartments. The wood feels smooth and precisely milled, suggesting the warmth of touching sanded birch or maple. Overhead, dramatic biomorphic ceiling forms in creamy ivory tones create cloud-like organic shapes with softly glowing coved edges that emit warm, diffused light reminiscent of sunlight through thin clouds, the temperature feeling gentle and inviting on the skin. The floor presents three distinct surfaces: polished gray concrete with the cool smoothness of river stone, warm oak wood flooring within the pavilion suggesting the pleasant give of quality hardwood, and in the foreground left, a circular Zen garden installation featuring white gravel with the fine granular texture of sand surrounding moss-covered rocks that would feel soft and slightly damp to touch. The far right displays shelving with glass jars containing colorful confections in coral, pale green, and golden amber tones.
Order is a necessary condition for a sense of ritual. The wooden ceiling is used as the design language throughout the whole project. The shape is full of changes, and the geometric shape mobilizes the atmosphere of the space. The circular arch elements are used to break the monotonous and long space at the end, giving the space a sense of extension and enhancing the limitation of the space.
