Concert Hall in Warsaw Music School

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2021

This description presents a concert hall interior photographed from an elevated position at the rear of the seating area, looking down toward a curved stage bearing a single grand piano. The overall format is square, capturing a cylindrical room approximately three stories in height. Beginning with the ceiling, a large circular wooden drum finished in warm honey tones forms the upper boundary, from which seven massive curved panels hang suspended on thin cables, each panel perhaps fifteen feet tall and eight feet wide, their surfaces displaying a warm terracotta-like color created by thousands of small perforations arranged in a pattern suggesting woven textile or ancient brick. The perforations appear as tiny rectangular openings that create visual texture resembling aged masonry or intricate lacework. Between these suspended panels, glimpses of a dark charcoal-colored rear wall become visible, along with theatrical lighting equipment mounted on black metal trusses. Moving to the stage level, a curved platform of pale blonde wood, smooth as polished birch with gentle warmth like sun-bleached driftwood, extends across the lower third of the image. Upon this stage sits a grand piano, its surface a deep glossy black like still water at midnight, positioned just off-center with its lid raised at an angle suggesting readiness for performance. The left wall features horizontal wooden slats in alternating widths, their warm amber tones complementing the suspended panels while creating subtle shadow lines that suggest gentle ribbing, cool to the touch like slatted wooden blinds. The right side presents tiered seating rising steeply upward, perhaps twelve rows visible, with seats upholstered in a muted slate-violet fabric that feels soft and substantial, their wooden armrests and backs matching the warm timber palette throughout. The lighting creates warm pools on the suspended panels while leaving the seating area in gentler illumination, suggesting the focused attention that performance commands. The overall atmosphere feels hushed and expectant, like the moment before a deep breath.

The heart of the Music School in Warsaw is a round-plan concert hall. The area divided in half between the audience and the stage allows to create a comfortable place for musicians and music lovers. The amphitheater arch surrounding young artists gives them an intimate workspace and sense of community with the audience. Wooden sail-shaped reflectors and a ceiling hanging in the hall give it a characteristic architectural expression. All of the acoustic aspects of the Konior Studio project were consulted with Nagata Acoustics.
