Shelter Desk

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2021

A contemporary writing desk occupies the central territory of the frame, captured from a three-quarter elevated viewpoint that allows comprehensive reading of its form and proportions. The desk measures perhaps forty inches in width and twenty-four inches in depth, constructed from warm-toned hardwood displaying natural grain in horizontal flowing patterns across all surfaces, the wood's color residing somewhere between pale honey and deeper amber depending on how light plays across different planes and angles. Beginning at the desktop surface, which forms the primary horizontal plane at approximately thirty inches above the floor, the smooth wood expanse extends left to right with a gentle forward curve carved into its front edge, this curved recess like a soft bite taken from the otherwise rectangular perimeter, smooth to imagine running your fingers along. On the left portion of this desktop surface rest a pair of headphones, their padded ear cushions covered in leather the warm brown of aged cognac, soft-looking and yielding, while the headband arcing between them appears to be brushed metal, cool to the touch one imagines, the whole form creating a sculptural loop. Moving rightward across the desk, two books lie stacked flat, their spines facing away, the top volume displaying "TORONTO" in white letters across a dark photographic cover showing architectural or urban imagery in grayscale, while the book beneath reads "PHOTOGRAPHY" in similar white typography, these volumes perhaps an inch and a half thick combined, their paper edges visible as thin cream-colored bands. Rising from atop these stacked books sits a small cylindrical planter, its exterior surface white ceramic with subtle horizontal ribbing that would feel like fine grooves under fingertips, containing a succulent plant whose pointed leaves radiate outward and upward in a star or crown formation, the leaves themselves a rich living green marked with tiny white spots like freckling, their surfaces appearing firm and slightly waxy, the plant perhaps eight inches in total height. The desk reveals a left-side drawer that has been pulled partially forward, its curved opening visible as it slides smoothly outward on what must be precision-engineered tracks, this drawer housing a laptop computer, just the corner and partial logo visible, the drawer's interior appearing in shadow, the pulled-out section creating a sense of active use and accessibility. The right section of the desktop features an inset rectangular panel of leather in warm terracotta or reddish-brown tones, this textured surface perhaps twelve inches by eighteen inches, providing a dedicated zone for the white wireless keyboard that rests upon it in neat alignment, the keyboard's keys like small white tiles, their plastic surfaces smooth and matte. The desk stands on four legs that angle outward from the body in splayed formation, each leg tapering from thicker diameter where it joins the desk body to narrower dimension at the floor, the wood grain running vertically down their length, these supports creating stable geometry while their outward cant conveys visual lightness. The room environment consists of an expansive pale surface, likely a wall, creating neutral backdrop that allows the desk's warmth to read clearly, while the far right edge of the frame shows a vertical plane in deep charcoal or black, this dark accent providing tonal contrast like a shadow or adjacent dark surface. The overall lighting feels soft and even, like natural light from a large window or diffused studio illumination, casting minimal hard shadows, instead creating gentle gradations that model the desk's forms and allow the wood's natural color variations to show, the whole scene conveying quiet order and the calm anticipation of productive work about to begin.

Motivated by the way most people are now working from home, Shelter arises as a wooden desk focused on productivity through organization. Since technology has become part of people’s daily routine, this desk’s design allows for convenient ways to connect the user with his gadgets via hidden and practical cable management. The tabletop features rounded drawers to add value to the design language, and material selection intends to give a sense of warmth and serenity to the user.
