Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
Scanning from background to foreground in this hotel lobby interior, the distant back wall features a dramatic dry-stacked stone surface constructed from irregular coral limestone pieces in pale cream and warm white tones reminiscent of sun-bleached shells or weathered bone, the rough texture catching light across its undulating surface to create a rich play of small shadows and highlights that suggests the warmth of stones heated by afternoon sun. Positioned against this textured backdrop stands a substantial reception counter in rich reddish-brown wood, approximately waist height, its clean horizontal form supported by two striking organic pedestals that appear to be polished sections of tree root or burl wood in warm amber and golden tones, their irregular organic shapes providing beautiful contrast to the geometric precision of the desktop surface above. A figure in light-colored clothing stands behind this counter, suggesting the welcoming presence of hospitality staff. Two small rectangular table lamps with pale fabric shades emit warm golden light from the counter surface, their glow creating intimate pools of illumination. Moving to the middle ground, the left portion of the space opens toward a glass wall revealing deepening blue twilight outside, where additional greenery is visible. Before this glass wall, low platform seating in warm wood frames supports cushions in soft gray tones like weathered driftwood, topped with decorative pillows featuring traditional woven patterns in stripes of deep indigo blue, rich crimson, and earthy ochre that feel soft and textured like handwoven cloth. The floor throughout consists of large polished tiles in cool taupe gray with subtle veining, smooth and slightly reflective underfoot. Dominating the foreground and serving as the spatial heart of the composition, a graceful multi-stemmed tree rises from a rectangular recessed planting bed filled with pale coral limestone rubble that would feel rough and irregular to the touch, like tumbled river stones or broken coral. The tree's slender trunks display smooth pale bark in warm cream and soft gray tones, branching upward with elegant asymmetry, while fresh green leaves in the bright yellow-green of new spring growth create a living canopy that softens the architectural geometry above. A spherical glass fishing float wrapped in rope netting, appearing cool and smooth like sea glass, rests among the stones at the tree's base, adding a subtle maritime reference to this serene, contemplative space.
The project plans to create a unique 'city resort' hotel in the heart of Naha-city, Okinawa. The name "Strata" was inspired by the land's rich nature and culture, which means layers of earth; it aims to discover layers of preexisting cultural gems and adding new layers of value to the ongoing cultural contents. The project also aimed to create a hotel that connects with the local community; original textiles are incorporated in a modern interior design by collaborating with local traditional artisans.
