House in Akashi Residential

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2021

Scanning this architectural photograph from sky to ground, listeners encounter a contemporary residential facade composed entirely of vertical wooden slats in warm honey and amber tones, resembling a giant woven screen stretched across the full width of a single-story dwelling. The upper portion of the frame presents an expansive sky in fresh cornflower blue, dotted with soft white clouds that range from wispy streaks to one fluffy formation positioned near center-left, this sky occupies roughly the upper third of the composition. Below the sky, the timber facade stretches horizontally like a protective wall of closely spaced vertical boards, each about the width of a hand, varying subtly in color from pale blonde to deeper caramel, creating a rhythmic pattern that feels simultaneously orderly and organic like reeds or bamboo. The texture would feel warm and slightly rough to touch, with visible wood grain running vertically along each batten. Toward the left third of the facade, an entry area recedes inward, creating a sheltered porch or vestibule where the vertical rhythm wraps around corners, this recessed space appears cool and shadowed, suggesting transition from bright exterior to protected interior. A simple pale door is barely visible within this threshold. To the right side of the facade, the timber screen becomes perforated with narrow vertical gaps between the boards, allowing glimpses of darkness beyond and suggesting hidden garden or courtyard spaces within. Young trees with fresh green leaves emerge above the roofline at several points, their organic shapes contrasting gently with the geometric precision of the timber grid. The foreground presents a smooth concrete driveway or courtyard in pale warm gray, stretching toward the facade like a welcome mat, its surface clean and level. A drainage grate runs along the bottom edge. The overall impression conveys warmth, protection, and thoughtful craft.

House in Akashi is a minimalist house designed to immerse one with nature. The house is divided into three zones, based on purpose and privacy, each with a garden and different concept. The first courtyard has a Japanese-style room for family, and a yard with kitchen garden. The second is a semi-public living dining space and a yard for viewing. Finally, bedrooms and the dry area provide for privacy and laundry. Through the courtyards, the plants, soil, wind and sky are always in view allowing nature into the house, blurring the lines between inside and outside.
