Al Majlis Traditional Restaurant

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2021

Scanning from foreground to background, this architectural interior presents a traditional restaurant entrance occupying the full frame in warm, welcoming earth tones. In the immediate foreground at center-bottom, a boat-shaped planter constructed of smooth cream-colored stone holds lush palm fronds with deep green fan-shaped leaves reaching upward and leftward, accompanied by smaller tropical plants with glossy emerald foliage. To the right of this planter sits a collection of traditional brass coffee vessels with graceful curved spouts, their surfaces carrying the warm golden-brown patina of aged metal, cool and smooth to imagine touching. The primary architectural element rises as a two-story structure directly before the viewer, its lower wall constructed of rough coral stone in variegated amber, tan, and cream tones suggesting a surface that would feel pitted and granular beneath fingertips like weathered seashell. This textured wall extends across approximately two-thirds of the composition width, bearing Arabic calligraphic text rendered in deep forest green paint that reads from right to left. Above this coral stone base rises smooth plastered walls in creamy beige, punctuated by small square ventilation openings arranged in grid patterns. Vertical pilasters create rhythmic shadows suggesting the tapered buttress forms of traditional Gulf architecture. To the left portion of the composition, an intricate lattice screen in cream-colored material presents interlocking circular and linear geometric patterns, creating a delicate visual texture like woven lace frozen in architectural form. Through and around this screen, additional architectural elements suggest depth and interior spaces beyond, including glimpses of decorative textiles in red tones. The upper register reveals exposed industrial infrastructure, dark metal ductwork and pipes running horizontally, with wooden beam elements spanning overhead, creating a warm-cool temperature contrast between traditional and contemporary elements. The overall atmosphere feels intimate, warm like afternoon sunlight on ancient stones, carrying an implied stillness of spaces designed for gathering and conversation.

Al Majlis is a famous traditional Saudi restaurant, presenting the essence of typical sixties experience in Riyadh. The designer conceptual idea was to implement the traditional exterior urban fabric inside using shifting modules to create dynamic composition of masses and walkways. To achieve this experience while respecting the cultural aspects and complicated operational needs were the main design challenges. Earthy colors, traditional patterns, natural materials, rustic effects and real pre-owned accessories were used to fully immerse users in an authentic experience.
