Ormankoy Community Centre Nature

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2021

Scanning this square-format aerial photograph from upper left to lower right, the viewer encounters a sweeping winter landscape dominated by an extensive forest blanketed in fresh snow. Beginning in the upper portion, dense rows of evergreen conifers march across the terrain, their dark green needles visible beneath accumulations of white snow that rest upon their branches like powdered sugar, creating a textured pattern reminiscent of soft, cool velvet laid across gentle slopes. The temperature of this scene feels decidedly crisp and still, the kind of cold that makes breath visible and snow squeak underfoot. Moving toward the center and right portions of the image, a contemporary building complex emerges from a clearing within the forest, its angular rooflines covered in pristine white snow that mirrors the surrounding landscape while its geometric precision distinguishes it clearly from the organic forms of nature. The structure features what appears to be timber or warm-toned cladding on certain facades, suggesting the tactile warmth of wood against the cool predominance of snow and evergreen. Most striking is an irregularly shaped pool or water feature adjacent to the building, its surface an intense blue-green like liquid jade or deep forest moss, unfrozen and smooth as polished stone, creating dramatic visual contrast against the white surroundings. The pool's organic, somewhat kidney-shaped form softens the geometric architecture and suggests connection to natural water bodies. In the lower portions of the image, deciduous trees stripped of leaves but heavy with frost and snow create an intricate lattice pattern, their branches appearing delicate as lace or fine silver filigree against the white ground. Pathways wind gently through the landscape, their curves suggesting leisurely movement rather than urgent transit. The overall atmosphere conveys profound stillness and tranquility, the kind of hushed silence that accompanies fresh snowfall, where sound seems absorbed by the white blanket covering every surface.

To establish an intersection between Ormankoy Community Centre and the surrounded natural park which is approx. 60.000 sqm, 2 biological ponds in size of total 4000 sqm had been incorporated to project area. Along the design process, it's aimed to form a clean and sleek geometry; a unique – iconic – lasting impact. Surrounded by the natural park, functional gains had met with the requirements by the advantage of having large foot area under the 2 gable roofs lowering to ground level.
