Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2021
Positioning yourself at an elevated vantage point looking across an expansive waterfront urban landscape, you encounter a scene dominated by atmospheric conditions that soften and veil much of what lies before you, creating layers of visibility that dissolve progressively into distant haze. In the middle distance rising prominently from the misty urban fabric, a tall twin-tower building complex commands attention, its two parallel vertical forms clad entirely in reflective glass that catches and scatters the diffused gray-blue light permeating the scene, these towers reaching upward perhaps fifty or sixty stories, their narrow proportions emphasizing height over breadth, each tower perhaps occupying only a small fraction of your visual field horizontally but extending through much of the vertical range from ground to sky. The building's glass facades appear in a cool blue-gray tone, suggesting the color of overcast sky reflected in countless window panes arranged in precise vertical rows, the overall effect reading as smooth and luminous despite the intricate detail of the curtain wall system, while at the tower's crown the roofline features distinctive sculptural elements that create visual interest against the pale gray sky above, these upper floors perhaps slightly darker or more defined in their articulation. At the base of the towers, connecting them and providing transitional grounding, a large sculptural podium structure presents flowing curved white surfaces with horizontal banding or ribbing that creates rhythmic texture, this base element perhaps three or four stories high and extending outward to occupy substantial ground area, its brightness standing in contrast to the more neutral-toned towers rising above, the overall relationship between vertical towers and horizontal base creating clear visual hierarchy and compositional balance. Immediately flanking the central tower complex on both left and right edges of your view, additional high-rise buildings under construction frame the composition, these structures appearing perhaps slightly closer to your position, their facades showing construction details and their forms providing vertical counterpoints that emphasize the central tower's height, these neighboring buildings rendered in similar cool blue-gray tones but with different surface articulation and proportions. The foreground and middle ground extend outward and downward from these building masses toward extensive water surfaces that occupy much of the lower portion of the view, these waters appearing smooth and relatively calm, reflecting the ambient gray light of the overcast sky as pale silvery-blue tonal fields, several bridge structures crossing these water bodies as delicate horizontal bands with regular vertical support elements creating rhythmic patterns. Small vessel forms, perhaps cargo ships or barges, sit on the water surfaces as dark compact shapes that provide scale reference and suggest maritime commercial activity. Moving your attention toward the background, the urban density continues but progressively loses definition as atmospheric moisture creates veiling effects, distant towers and buildings appearing as ghostly silhouettes with minimal detail visible, their forms suggested rather than clearly defined, this graduated loss of clarity creating strong sense of spatial depth as nearer elements remain relatively crisp while distant elements fade into the pervasive mist that fills the air. The overall atmospheric quality suggests early morning or late afternoon during weather conditions characterized by heavy fog or industrial haze, the light coming from no single clear source but instead seeming to emanate from the pale overcast sky as soft, even, diffused illumination that eliminates harsh shadows while creating gentle tonal modeling across the building surfaces, this quality of light lending the entire scene a quiet, contemplative, almost dreamlike character despite the evident urban density and metropolitan scale. The color palette throughout remains remarkably restrained, dominated by variations of cool blue, gray, and white with only subtle warm notes visible perhaps in some building materials or ground surfaces, this limited chromatic range unified by the pervasive atmospheric moisture that acts as a visual filter softening contrasts and creating tonal harmony across the entire scene. Temperature associations throughout suggest coolness, the colors and atmospheric conditions evoking the tactile sensation of cool moisture in the air, the smooth reflective building surfaces suggesting the coolness of glass and metal, while the enveloping mist implies the humidity and freshness of water-saturated air, the overall sensory impression being one of quiet, stillness, and cool atmospheric conditions that muffle sound and soften visual experience, creating contemplative viewing that rewards patient observation as details gradually reveal themselves within the misty environment.
The project is located in Hengqin CBD Island and classified as mix-used land, including office, conference, exhibition, apartment and retail. All functions are planned as a whole to forge it into a landmark.
Inspired by "Kowloon map", the project has a unique and spiral shape rising from the ground to the sky to express speed, power, and vitality. In order to achieve such elegant form, state-of-the-art digital techniques are used to rationalize the complex shape and achieve cost control. The project is the combination of traditional Chinese totem and contemporary architecture development.
