Industrial Dynamic Autocare Cafe

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Scanning this interior photograph from back to front and left to right, listeners encounter a dramatic double-height commercial space combining cafe and automotive service functions. The ceiling plane rises approximately six meters overhead, constructed of corrugated metal decking in silver-gray tones with the cool, slightly dusty character of galvanized steel. Suspended beneath this ceiling, a network of black steel trusses creates bold geometric patterns, their triangulated forms like three-dimensional lattice work, matte black as cast iron, with diagonal members crossing at regular intervals. From these overhead structures descend numerous pendant light fixtures at varying heights, their industrial dome shapes finished in warm charcoal gray with cream-colored interiors that emit soft amber light suggesting the warmth of early evening lamplight. At frame center, a substantial service counter commands attention, its surfaces clad in dramatic black stone with white veining resembling lightning strikes against a night sky, cool and smooth as polished granite. This counter forms an angular peninsula extending toward the viewer, creating intimate bar seating along one edge where tall black metal stools with minimal round seats await occupants. Atop the counter, professional espresso equipment in brushed stainless steel and black catches highlights, while a wooden cutting board in warm honey tones provides textural contrast soft as sanded oak. Behind the counter, glass-fronted display cases glow with warm interior lighting revealing pastries in golden and brown tones. The right portion of the space opens dramatically through floor-to-ceiling windows with distinctive arched tops framed in black metal, their mullion patterns creating elegant geometric divisions. Through these generous windows, daylight enters with the bright, even quality of an overcast afternoon, revealing trees with feathery green foliage outside, their sage and olive tones providing natural counterpoint. The floor stretches as polished concrete in mottled gray with subtle green undertones, smooth and cool, reflecting overhead elements like still water.

In this double volume industrial building, a collaborative business between Frank Laurent Coffee Roaster and Lee Motors Bodyworks and Bespoke Motoring are made to run in great dynamic. The car detailing shop opted for an industrial vintage look while the cafe’s brand is leaning towards minimalism. With the challenge of merging the design styles together, the usage of bricks, concrete and design features such as metal arches or trusses were incorporate into the design to resemble a vintage industrial warehouse; while the colors, materials and furniture selections are of minimalist style.
