Pingshan Cultural Cluster Book Mall Bookstore

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

This description presents a large contemporary bookstore interior photographed from ground level, capturing a dramatic double-height space with industrial and warm natural materials. Scanning from background to foreground, the composition reveals soaring walls finished in textured concrete panels the color of storm clouds or weathered limestone, their surface suggesting the cool, slightly rough texture of cast stone. The ceiling appears to dissolve into polished mirror, reflecting the space below and creating an impression of infinite height, its surface cool and smooth like still water. Small bright lights pierce this reflective plane like stars, their starburst quality suggesting crisp winter light. Moving to the left third of the frame, a generous staircase ascends diagonally, its treads finished in honey-colored oak that appears warm and smooth underfoot, like well-worn furniture. Black metal railings trace clean horizontal lines alongside. A solitary figure in a warm taupe coat ascends these stairs, providing human scale to the monumental proportions. The center of the composition opens onto a retail floor finished in pale ash-blonde wood planking, its grain suggesting the smooth warmth of sanded timber. Scattered across this surface are display cubes the color of kraft paper or cardboard, their forms simple and geometric, housing books in casual arrangements. A figure in dark blue-gray clothing stands among these displays, absorbed in browsing. The right portion reveals floor-to-ceiling shelving in matching warm oak, creating a dense textural field of vertical elements that appears organized and inviting, like a well-curated personal library. The overall atmosphere combines industrial coolness from the concrete with welcoming warmth from the abundant timber, suggesting a space designed for extended contemplation. The implied sounds are hushed footsteps, the soft rustle of turning pages, perhaps quiet ambient music.

Pingshan Cultural Cluster - Book Mall, taking the local Hakka enclosed house culture as the design concept and the pattern of round outside but square inside as the main feature, has its space divided into "Square" and "Round" zones. The square zone is oriented to young people, the overall layout of which expands around the central activity area. Inspired by "Diaolou" (tower building), we adopt the highly structured facade of Diaolou to create characteristic walls for the atrium. The use of mirror finish ceiling makes the image extend infinitely, activating the memory to the whole space.
