Kohan Ceram Central Office Building Mixed-Use

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

A large architectural photograph presents the exterior facade of a multi-story building constructed entirely of warm terracotta-colored brick, the overall impression suggesting earthy warmth like sun-baked clay or aged pottery. Scanning from the top of the frame downward, the upper portion displays continuous brick surfaces punctuated by circular holes arranged in neat rows, these perforations creating a dotted pattern against the warm orange-brown background. Moving toward the center, rectangular window openings of various sizes break through the brick screen at different heights and positions, some tall and narrow like vertical slits, others more square in proportion, revealing glimpses of dark interior spaces and fresh green plants growing within. The brick surface projects forward and recedes in places, creating a three-dimensional texture where some sections extend outward as balconies or projecting volumes while others sit further back, establishing shadows that deepen the visual complexity. Near the center of the composition, within one of the rectangular openings, a person is visible from approximately the waist up, appearing to look downward at something held in their hands, their presence providing human scale to the monumental brick expanse surrounding them. The lower portion of the frame reveals additional window openings, including one larger rectangular aperture at bottom right showing interior space with glazing, while green leafy plants emerge from the bottom edge and from several window boxes throughout the facade. The texture throughout feels rough and grainy like fired clay, the surface appearing matte and absorptive rather than reflective. Bright daylight illuminates the facade from what seems to be an upper angle, casting distinct shadows where volumes project forward and creating subtle tonal variations across the brick surface that suggest warmth like afternoon sunshine on earthen walls.

This project is the headquarters for Kohan Ceram Brick Manufacturing Company, including showroom, sales office, and a guest unit. Situated alongside a highway in Tehran, this project marks the boundary between the residential neighborhood and the freeway in the urban fabric. The main criterion was to remain neutral in the urban scale while creating a tangible entity in the local scale. The brick were used as the main representative of the company. The brick module not only forms the façade, but also forms the entirety of the project both on the interior and the exterior.
