Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
This architectural interior photograph presents a contemporary office space characterized by dramatic interplay between transparency and warmth, measuring approximately square in format with the viewpoint positioned at standing height looking through multiple layers of glass partitions. Beginning in the immediate foreground, vertical panels of clear glass rise from floor to ceiling, their edges catching light as thin bright lines that create a rhythmic visual pattern moving from left toward the right side of the composition. The glass possesses a cool, smooth quality suggesting surfaces that would feel slick and substantial beneath fingertips, like touching a window on a crisp morning. Moving deeper into the space, white horizontal platforms extend from left, cantilevering into the void with surfaces that appear smooth as polished stone, cool and solid. The predominant warmth in the scene emanates from the middle and background zones where horizontal wooden slat screens glow with amber light reminiscent of honey held before candlelight or late afternoon sun filtering through autumn leaves. This warm golden illumination creates an inviting contrast against the cooler neutral tones elsewhere. The floor surface appears dark, perhaps charcoal or deep brown, with a polished quality that reflects the vertical glass panels above, doubling the sense of spatial depth like still water reflecting a forest. The ceiling remains predominantly dark, receding into shadow while occasional recessed lights create small bright accents. The overall atmosphere suggests quiet sophistication, a space where sounds would be muffled by the layered glass and where the air might feel fresh and climate-controlled. The compositional feeling evokes calm professionalism, a meditative workspace where visual transparency creates connection while physical separation maintains individual focus and comfort.
For its first created office since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the challenge Matsuo Gakuin was facing is to find a solution for protecting its office users while keeping the aesthetic values the company has always cherished. A thunder shaped table runs along the office dividing the space into staff and guest areas. Glass panels were sandwiched between the board and its duplicate hanging from the ceiling. The glass panels run alternatively through two parallel lines separated by 20cm space. This disposition forms a protective shield while allowing air and documents circulation.
