Flexo InForm Assembly Pavilion

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Scanning from background to foreground, listeners encounter a timber lattice pavilion photographed outdoors in a parkland setting with mature trees creating a natural backdrop. The upper portion of the image presents a pale blue sky visible through gaps in leafy tree canopy, with branches extending across approximately the top third of the composition in tones ranging from warm brown bark to cool green foliage. The middle ground reveals an open grassy lawn of fresh green extending toward distant fence posts and additional trees rendered as soft blue-green masses. Dominating the center and lower portions stands a dome-shaped structure approximately three meters tall and four meters wide, constructed entirely from interwoven strips of bent plywood. The wood displays warm honey and amber tones reminiscent of fresh-cut pine or birch, with variations from pale cream to deeper caramel where multiple layers overlap. The strips, each appearing approximately ten to fifteen centimeters wide, curve gracefully from ground level upward, crossing and recrossing to form a rhythmic diamond-pattern mesh across the entire surface. Metal bolts or rivets appear as small silver points at each intersection, creating a secondary dotted rhythm within the larger weave. The texture suggests smooth machined surfaces with a slight satin sheen where light catches the curves. Light falls from the upper left as soft diffused daylight, creating gentle warmth across the timber surfaces and casting subtle shadows beneath the structure onto grass below. The pavilion rests on a rectangular timber base of darker reddish-brown wood that anchors it to the lawn. A large opening at front left, roughly human-height, provides entry into the sheltered interior. Small figures visible through distant apertures suggest the structure accommodates standing adults comfortably. The overall impression conveys lightness and organic grace, as if a giant woven basket had settled gently onto the grass.

Flexo InForm is an assembly pavilion derived from an innovative design processes oriented to geometric-material performance. The process developed begins with the parametric discretization of a complex geometry inspired by the weaving of natural fibers typical of the Argentine Littoral region. Simulation algorithms use active bending behavior as a design tool applied to structures that base their geometry on the elastic deformation of laminar elements. The result is a low-cost mono-material pavilion, self-supporting, adaptable to any terrain topography, low weight and fast assembly.
