Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
A sculptural pendant light fixture suspended against a cool blue-gray background fills the frame, presenting as a spherical form approximately centered in the composition. Scanning from the outer edges inward, the outermost ring forms a complete circle roughly three-quarters the width of the image, constructed from clear transparent material with a surface carved in diagonal parallel ridges that catch light along their edges. Moving inward, three or four additional concentric rings nest within this outer boundary, each progressively smaller and positioned at slightly different angles that together create a spiraling vortex effect drawing the eye toward center. The material throughout appears glass-like in its clarity, cool to the touch as polished crystal might feel, with surfaces alternating between smooth curved profiles and textured ridged areas reminiscent of running fingers across ribbed fabric. Warm amber and champagne-gold highlights trace along the carved ridges, suggesting late afternoon sunlight or candlelight warmth against the cool clarity of the base material—these golden tones appear most concentrated along the upper right quadrant and trace sinuous paths following the spiral geometry. The background graduates from deeper slate-blue in the lower corners, reminiscent of twilight sky or deep water, lightening through pale aqueous gray toward the top, suggesting open atmospheric space without specific environmental detail. At the precise center, a small spherical element approximately the size of a large marble anchors the composition, appearing slightly more opaque and serving as the visual terminus of the spiraling journey inward. A thin cable, barely visible, extends upward from the top of the fixture toward the upper edge of frame, suggesting suspension. The overall atmosphere conveys cool stillness with gentle warmth, like entering an air-conditioned space while sunlight streams through windows. The fixture appears to float in this atmospheric void, creating a sense of weightlessness despite its evident substantial presence. The level of detail throughout is precise and highly refined, each ridge and curve crisply defined, suggesting master craftsmanship in both design and execution.
This design references a quirkier side of lighting, offering a range of non-uniform, asymmetric blown glass forms that feature a hidden light source, emanating from a selection of intricate acrylic centres. Each can be viewed as a bespoke hand-crafted item yet belong to an overall aesthetic that ultimately explores the relationship between light, both natural and integral, and the singular beautiful properties of overlaying layers of twisted optical glass. Initially offered as a stand-alone pendant, future plans include table-top variations, wall lights and multi-array feature chandeliers.
