Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
This audio description presents an architectural interior designed as a spa lighting environment, square in format, dominated by cool blue-gray tones with warm golden accents. Beginning at the top of the composition, three spherical light fixtures hang from a domed ceiling, each approximately the size of a small melon in visual scale relative to the space. These fixtures present a striking appearance: their outer surfaces appear matte black like slate or charcoal, while their interiors glow with a warm burnished gold reminiscent of afternoon sunlight through honey. The ceiling curves downward in concentric bands, creating a rotunda effect. These bands graduate in color from pale dusty blue at the zenith, cool like morning mist, through increasingly deeper blue-grays suggesting twilight shadows, with touches of sage green appearing in the middle registers. The surface texture appears smooth and slightly matte, perhaps suggesting polished plite or traditional lime plaster, cool and smooth to imagined touch. Moving to the middle register, the curved wall continues its descent, punctuated by three arched openings. The central arch appears smaller and more distant, positioned directly below the center ceiling fixture, while two larger arches flank it symmetrically at left and right. These niches radiate warm golden light from within, the color of melted butter or late afternoon sun, creating intimate alcoves that contrast with the cool surrounding walls. The arches have semicircular profiles, their smooth curves suggesting Roman or Byzantine architectural traditions. In the foreground, a perfectly still pool of water extends across the full width of the image. Its surface acts as a mirror, reflecting the three golden arches as inverted crescents and doubling the visual depth of the space. The water appears cool and calm, suggesting the fresh temperature of a spring-fed pool. Small recessed lights near the pool edge create subtle warm points of illumination. The overall atmosphere evokes profound tranquility, like standing within a temple at twilight, the only implied sound being perfect silence.
The Spa at the Euphoria Retreat, is located in Mystra. It is a four-story building, of 3.000 m2, that is carved into the base of a mountain. The lighting for each space was considered as a unique piece, contributing to the crescendo of the ultimate relaxation experience. As daylight would vary substantially from one space to another, custom luminaires were designed to imitate daylight conditions, thus harmonizing the transitions through spaces and enhancing the immersive architecture.
