Unream Voxel Printed Lamp

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2020

A sculptural lamp stands centered on a white cubic pedestal against a soft neutral gray background, the object itself rising approximately twelve inches in height with a distinctive organic form that swells outward at its lower portion before tapering to a narrower opening at the top, somewhat resembling a vase or bulbous vessel. The surface presents a mesmerizing pattern of vertical ridges running from base to crown, creating a pleated or corrugated texture that appears both precise and organic, like geological formations carved by water over time or the ribbed structure of certain shells and seed pods. The color palette moves through a spectrum of cool and warm tones, with bands of sky blue and deeper cobalt blue flowing into passages of vivid magenta, fuchsia, and soft violet, these colors arranged in vertical striations that follow the ridged topography of the surface. The material appears translucent, allowing light to penetrate and create subtle internal glow, particularly visible where the ridges thin to near-white at their peaks, suggesting a polymer or resin-like substance with glass-like optical properties. The lighting comes from above and slightly forward, soft and diffused like an overcast sky, creating gentle gradations across the undulating surface without harsh shadows, the minimal cast shadow beneath the object appearing as a soft dark halo on the white pedestal surface. The ridges themselves create a rhythmic vertical pattern, perhaps twenty to thirty channels running the full height of the form, each ridge catching light differently depending on its orientation, some appearing brighter where they face the light source, others receding into cooler shadow. The overall impression suggests something between natural formation and technological creation, the colors vibrant and saturated like stained glass or candy, the form bulging outward with organic fullness before narrowing upward, creating a sense of contained energy or growth. The white pedestal provides clean geometric contrast to the complex organic form above it, its crisp edges and matte surface emphasizing the translucent luminosity and chromatic richness of the lamp. The background remains neutral and slightly warm, ensuring the colorful form commands full attention without visual competition. The entire composition reads as carefully considered product presentation, the object isolated and celebrated as a singular achievement of form, color, and light interaction.

In the daytime, Unream is an artifact that reflects sunlight to display dynamically; at night, it uses artificial lights to create a fantasy-like atmosphere. With Unream, the designers hope to blur the line between the digital and physical world, bringing impossible materials to real-world product design. Unream is the first 3D printed object that displays dynamically by itself. With multi-material voxel printing, the designers expand binary material presence to dynamic material experience, reimagining the relationship between human, space, and objects.
