Narvik Top Station Gondola

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

An architectural photograph in landscape format presents a contemporary mountain gondola station positioned on a snow-covered alpine slope during sunset conditions. Scanning from left to right across the composition, the left third features the warm golden orb of the setting sun positioned just above the horizon, surrounded by graduated bands of color transitioning from pale yellow through soft orange to cool blue as the eye moves upward through the expansive sky that occupies the upper half of the image. The foreground and lower portion display pristine white snow with gentle undulating contours and subtle blue-violet shadows where the surface dips and curves, the texture appearing soft and powdery like fine flour or cotton batting. The central focal point is a dramatic dark angular building that rises from the snow like a wedge or blade, its surfaces clad in vertical corrugated metal panels that read as deep charcoal gray, almost black against the bright surroundings. The structure features a distinctive profile with multiple angled planes creating a stepped or faceted silhouette, the tallest section reaching perhaps four stories high at right before descending to lower elements at left where the building appears to taper toward the snow. Frost and ice cling to portions of the metal cladding, creating lighter accents along the vertical ribs that catch the warm sunset light. To the right edge of the composition, a gondola cable car cabin can be seen suspended on cables, its rounded form providing contrast to the angular architecture. Behind and below the structure, distant elements suggest a fjord or body of water rendered in cool blue-gray tones, with mountain ranges visible on the far horizon appearing in soft atmospheric violet-blue, progressively lighter and hazier with distance. The overall mood feels serene yet dramatic, the warm light creating a sense of peaceful conclusion to the day while the bold architectural form commands attention.

The Narvik ski resort is located directly above the city centre and is characterised by a very steep height to length ratio - from a 1000 meter above sea level all the way down to the sea. The new gondola brings the skiers up to the mountain top. The gondola top station is custom designed for the gondola functional requirements and the harsh climatic conditions, but also to form an integrated part of the overall Narvik Arctic Resort design strategy.
