Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020
Beginning orientation for a square-format overhead photograph featuring a chocolate bar arrangement against dark wood, the composition centers on a rectangular chocolate bar approximately one-third the image height, distinguished by its deeply sculptured surface of angular geometric facets arranged in two columns of interlocking diagonal planes, the chocolate displays rich brown coloring ranging from deep chestnut in shadowed angular recesses to warm reddish-mahogany where light catches the raised edges, creating a surface that appears almost architectural in its precise geometry, this chocolate rests centered upon a rectangular ceramic tray slightly larger than the bar itself, the tray features a ribbed or corrugated texture along its length with raised edges forming a shallow frame, its coloring presents warm sandy beige with subtle cream variations and touches of golden-brown along the textured ridges suggesting handcrafted stoneware, beneath this tray extends a large tropical leaf positioned diagonally from lower left toward upper right, the leaf displays saturated deep green coloring with a prominent lighter green central vein and parallel secondary veins radiating outward, its surface appears smooth and slightly glossy with gently undulating edges, the leaf spans roughly three-quarters of the composition width creating a bold diagonal element, all these elements rest upon a dark surface of weathered wood grain running horizontally across the frame, the wood displays deep charcoal gray with subtle variations suggesting age and natural wear, providing strong value contrast against the lighter elements above, lighting descends softly from above creating gentle shadows beneath the leaf edges and tray, while emphasizing the dimensional quality of the chocolate's faceted surface through graduated highlights and shadows, the overall impression suggests quiet refinement and careful attention to natural materials arranged for contemplative appreciation.
The design is inspired by the origin of Dengo's cacao – the heart of the Atlantic Forest in Bahia, Brazil. The cacao is harvested in cabruca, a traditional agroforestry and forest-positive system. In an effort to inspire, create brand recognition and convey the brand's message to the consumer, the designers turned the chocolate bar into a sculpture that represents some of the surrounding elements, such as dry leaves on the ground, foliage of the tall trees that provide beautiful play of light and shadow, and a variety of seeds.
