Perception Cafe

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2020

The café interior extends before you within a rectangular format oriented in landscape proportion, with the composition divided into two primary spatial registers: the upper two-thirds occupied by a dramatically sculptured ceiling installation and the lower third containing the functional café service environment below. Beginning with the ceiling, which commands immediate attention through its sculptural complexity and warm tonal presence, parallel wooden ribs flow across the entire overhead plane in undulating waves that create a sense of rhythmic movement and organic fluidity, each rib appearing as a thin laminated strip perhaps two to three inches in depth, stacked in close parallel sequence with minimal gaps between, and edged with pale cream or natural light wood tone that creates linear contrast against the darker brown faces, with the overall color progressing through a gradient of earth tones including golden amber like honey or caramel, warm cinnamon and ginger browns, deeper burnt sienna suggesting aged leather or autumn leaves, and rich chocolate brown approaching the color of dark cocoa, all rendered in warm temperatures that suggest afternoon sunlight or candlelight warmth. The wooden ribs curve in broad, gentle arcs that flow from left to right across your view, rising and falling in wave patterns reminiscent of windswept sand dunes, rolling ocean swells, or the layered strata of sedimentary geology, creating a three-dimensional sculptural relief that casts soft shadows between each layer and establishes strong perspectival recession as the ribs appear to diminish in size toward the back of the space, conveying substantial depth and volume within the interior. The surface quality of the wood appears smooth and matte, suggesting sanded and sealed finish that preserves the natural grain texture while providing subtle sheen, with the lamination layers and wood grain creating fine linear texture throughout. Moving to the lower café environment in the foreground and middle ground, the floor presents as pale terrazzo or polished concrete in soft warm gray or beige, smooth and reflective enough to capture ambient light and create gentle luminous glow underfoot, suggesting cool smoothness like polished stone. The service counter extends horizontally across the middle ground as a long linear element in crisp white, its surface appearing as smooth laminate or solid surface material, clean and matte, topped with various café equipment including what appears to be an espresso machine in metallic silver, a black kettle, and tap handles suggesting beverage service, arranged in organized functional sequence. Several pendant light fixtures suspend from thin cables at various heights, their shades appearing as simple white conical or dome forms that direct focused warm light downward onto the work surface. To the left, horizontal window blinds in warm natural wood tone filter incoming daylight, creating soft striped light pattern and suggesting exterior connection, their slats appearing smooth and evenly spaced. In the foreground left, simple wooden furniture including what appears to be a table and stool in natural light timber suggest seating area, their forms geometric and minimalist with visible wood grain and matte finish suggesting smooth sanded wood, warm to touch like sun-warmed pine or oak. The shelving visible at right holds various items in white and colorful containers, adding functional detail. The overall spatial atmosphere feels warm, inviting, and contemplative, with the dramatic overhead sculpture creating visual interest and organic softness while the clean minimal service area below maintains practical clarity, the lighting creating gentle warmth throughout with neither harsh shadows nor flat illumination, and the materiality suggesting natural tactile qualities of smooth polished stone underfoot, warm wood grain on furniture and blinds, and cool smooth surfaces at the service counter.

This small warm wooden feel cafe located on the corner of crossroad within a quiet neighborhood. The centralized open-preparation zone makes a clean and extensive experience of barista's performance to visitors everywhere that bar seat or table seat in a cafe. The ceiling object called "Shading tree" starts from the backside of the preparation zone, and it covers the customer zone to makes the entire atmosphere of this cafe. It gives an unusual spatial effect to visitors and also become a medium for people who want to be lost in thought with flavorous coffee.
